THE SHORT ANSWER
If you run a sole trader business or your own limited company, you are entitled to sickness benefit from the Swedish Social Insurance Agency, but it is calculated differently from an employee's. According to verksamt.se, the public agencies' website for business owners, there is no requirement to hold private insurance. At the same time, as self-employed you do not have the cover many employees get through collective agreements.
This guide covers your personal insurance: sickness benefit and waiting days, unemployment insurance and income insurance, and life and accident cover. Insurance for the business's property and liability is a separate matter, covered last. What happens when you leave a job to start a business is in the guide to changing jobs, leaving a union or becoming self-employed. [3][2]
Keep these points in mind
- Sickness benefit is based on the business result or the salary you take out.
- Collective agreement insurance and occupational pension do not follow you automatically.
- Business insurance and your personal insurance are separate agreements.
STEP BY STEP
How to check your cover
Find out how your sickness benefit is calculated
The Swedish Social Insurance Agency calculates a sickness benefit qualifying income, known as SGI. With a sole trader business or a trading partnership, it is based on the business result before tax, after the deductions in your tax return. If your earnings vary a lot between years, the agency calculates an average. If you registered and started the business within the last three years, the SGI is instead based on what an employee with similar duties would have earned.
With a limited company, the SGI is based on the salary you take out. The highest possible SGI is 592 000 kr in 2026, and if you earn less than 14 200 kr a year you have no SGI. If you have both a job and a business, the earnings are added together. What the agency pays and where the ceiling lies is covered in the guide to social insurance and private insurance.
[2]Check your waiting days and how to report sickness
With a sole trader business you normally have 7 waiting days, according to the Swedish Social Insurance Agency, and you can choose 1, 14, 30, 60 or 90 days instead. According to verksamt.se, the sickness insurance fee is lower the more waiting days you choose, but you receive no sickness benefit during them. You cannot shorten your waiting period if you have been absent from work due to illness at any time in the last two years.
Report sickness to the agency on the first day, or within 7 days at the latest, and send a medical certificate if you are ill for more than 7 days. If you have a limited company, you count as an employee of it: according to verksamt.se you then report sick to the company, and the agency becomes involved once you have been ill for more than two weeks. The special high-risk protection only applies with 1 or 7 waiting days.
[1][3]See what is missing without a collective agreement
According to Avtalat, the pension and insurance a company takes out for its employees under a collective agreement do not apply to the owner or managing director. The exception is TFA, the occupational injury insurance, which applies to everyone. Owners include sole traders, all partners in a trading partnership and anyone who, alone or with family, owns at least a third of the shares in a limited company.
Avtalat says owners and managing directors who are not covered need to arrange their own protection, for example through individual policies from any insurer. Owners of a sole trader business or trading partnership cannot have the collectively agreed occupational pension ITP. Put your own policy documents beside what you had as an employee before drawing conclusions about what exists.
[4]Read the rules for unemployment insurance and income insurance
According to Sveriges a-kassor, as a business owner you normally have to stop all activity in the business before claiming benefit, either by closing it or making it dormant. If you restart the business after a dormant period, at least three years must pass before you can again receive benefit while it is dormant. Closing or pausing without a valid reason means no benefit for roughly the first two months.
According to Konsumenternas, a private income insurance policy usually requires permanent employment, membership of an a-kassa and no known risk of redundancy when you take it out. A payment requires that you have been granted a-kassa benefit. Income insurance through a union may have other rules, so read who it covers. The requirements are explained in the guide to income insurance and a-kassa.
[5][6]
Life and accident cover you arrange yourself
According to Konsumenternas, life insurance is risk cover and not savings. Survivors receive a lump sum if the policy is in force when you die. Konsumenternas says the need depends on who relies on your earnings and what other cover you have, for example if you share a loan.
You may need to fill in a health declaration, and most life policies end when you are between 67 and 90. verksamt.se lists accident insurance, and pension insurance or private pension savings, among the cover a business owner can arrange. How to read life cover is explained in the guide to life insurance and survivor protection.
[7][8]Business insurance is a separate matter
verksamt.se lists insurance for the business: property insurance, liability insurance for damages if your products or services harm someone, business interruption insurance for lost revenue, and legal expenses insurance. It also mentions sick leave insurance, which can pay fixed costs when you are ill. These protect the business and are separate agreements from your personal cover.
According to verksamt.se, home insurance only covers items used for private purposes. Business tools, furniture, stock and finished products are not covered there, and a computer used both privately and for the business may be treated as business property. Read the business policy and the home policy side by side when checking what applies to your belongings.
[8]Keep your own statements in one place
Keep your own policy documents, your statements on a-kassa and income insurance, and any older statements from a previous employer in My Forsio. You then have the documents in one place, and each detail shows the passage it came from. If a document is missing, the detail shows as Not verified, not as confirmed absent.
Forsio does not calculate your SGI, decide whether you are entitled to sickness benefit or a-kassa, or assess what insurance the business needs. That is for the Swedish Social Insurance Agency, the a-kassa and the insurer. Forsio is not an insurance intermediary and does not provide insurance advice.
Fictional example
New business, old statements.
Amir went from employment to a sole trader business this spring and is checking what remains of his cover.
- Waiting days at the Social Insurance Agency
- 7 days, no choice made
- Income insurance through the union
- Not verifiedCheck whether the terms cover the self-employed.
- Life cover from the previous job
- Ended with the employmentPotential gapNo personal life cover in the documents.
Sickness benefit is in place, but the income insurance needs confirming. The life cover from work did not follow him, and whether he wants his own is for Amir to decide.
Common questions
How much sickness benefit do I get with a sole trader business?
It depends on your SGI, which the Swedish Social Insurance Agency calculates from the business result before tax. Sickness benefit can be paid at 25, 50, 75 or 100 percent, depending on how much the illness reduces your ability to work. The SGI can be at most 592 000 kr in 2026. You receive no sickness benefit during the waiting days you have chosen. [2][1][3]
How do I choose the number of waiting days?
Forsio does not decide that. According to the Swedish Social Insurance Agency, you have 7 waiting days if you make no choice, and you can choose 1, 14, 30, 60 or 90 days instead. More waiting days mean a lower sickness insurance fee, according to verksamt.se, but a longer period without sickness benefit. The high-risk protection only applies with 1 or 7 waiting days. [1][3]
Do collective agreement insurance and occupational pension apply to me as owner?
Not through the agreement. According to Avtalat, pension and insurance under a collective agreement do not apply to the owner or managing director, except TFA for occupational injuries. Owners of a sole trader business or trading partnership cannot have ITP. Pension and insurance need to be arranged in other ways, for example through individual policies. [4]
Can I get unemployment benefit as a business owner?
According to Sveriges a-kassor, you normally have to stop all activity first, by closing the business or making it dormant. The benefit is based on your latest taxed earnings from the business, or on the average of the two previous years if that is more favourable. Ask your a-kassa what applies in your case. [5]
Do I need private sickness insurance as self-employed?
Forsio does not decide that. According to verksamt.se, there is no requirement to hold private insurance, but sickness insurance and income insurance are given as examples to consider. Konsumenternas says sickness insurance often requires you to have been on sick leave for at least three months before it pays. Read the waiting period and requirements in each policy. [3][6]
Does home insurance cover things I use in the business?
According to verksamt.se, home insurance only covers items used for private purposes. A computer used both privately and for the business may be treated as business property. Business property is insured through business insurance instead. [8]
