Income insurance and a-kassa: what should you check?

Income insurance and membership of an a-kassa are different things. Check membership, qualifying periods and the conditions for payment.

Go to the steps

THE SHORT ANSWER

Income insurance for unemployment may supplement benefits from your a-kassa, or unemployment insurance fund. Being listed among your union's membership benefits does not mean every requirement for payment has been met.

Check two things separately: which income insurance covers you and which documents confirm your a-kassa membership. A union membership card does not answer both questions. [1][2]

Keep these points in mind

  • Your union and a-kassa have separate memberships.
  • Qualifying periods may apply to both.
  • Read the current terms, not just a percentage.

STEP BY STEP

How to check your cover

  1. Find your insurance statement

Find the current terms of your income insurance. Note who is insured, how you joined and when cover began. Distinguish the basic policy from any additions with different amounts or numbers of days.

    [2]
  2. Check your a-kassa separately

Sign in to your a-kassa or request a membership statement. Compare your joining date with the income insurance requirements. Paying a union fee is not enough evidence to confirm this.

    [2]
  3. Read the conditions that trigger payment

Check the requirements for membership, qualifying periods, previous income and a decision from your a-kassa. Also read what applies if you resign or there is a known risk of unemployment. Meeting one condition does not replace the others.

    [1][2]
  4. Match the right version of the rules

New unemployment insurance rules have applied since 1 October 2025. Benefit periods decided earlier may follow the previous rules. Ask your a-kassa and insurer to confirm which rules apply to your case before calculating benefits.

    [3]

A percentage is not a guarantee

How long benefits may be paid and at what level depend on the terms and the a-kassa's decision. The level may change during the benefit period. Read the limits, number of days and any reductions over time.

For example, Unionen's policy has qualifying-period requirements for both union and a-kassa membership. Those are the rules of that particular policy, not a promise that the same terms apply to every union.

Make the unclear part visible

My Forsio can bring insurance documents together and show what needs completing. A statement of income insurance does not automatically confirm a-kassa membership.

When that information is missing, check it and complete your answers under About you. Forsio does not decide entitlement to a-kassa benefits or income insurance payments.

Fictional example

The insurance is there. One condition is unclear.

The membership statement lists income insurance, but no current statement from the a-kassa has been added.

You cannot conclude that the person has no a-kassa membership or would receive a payment. The information needs checking.

Common questions

Is an a-kassa the same as a union?

No. They have different roles, and each membership needs checking separately. Income insurance through a union may require you to also meet the conditions of an a-kassa. [2]

Will the insurance pay my entire previous salary?

Do not assume so. It supplements other benefits within its limits. Check the income ceiling, payment days, level and coordination with other payments in the terms that apply to you. [1]

What does Unverified mean here?

The documents or information you have provided are not yet enough to confirm the condition. It is not a decision from your a-kassa or a rejected application.
