Work & union

What insurance do I have through work and my union?

TGL, AGS, TFA and membership insurance may sit outside your private policy documents. Here is how to find out what applies to you.

Go to the steps

THE SHORT ANSWER

Insurance through work and your union does not always appear among the bills you pay yourself. Some cover comes with your employment or membership. Other policies are offers you need to accept.

Start by finding out which agreements apply to you. A missing policy document means the cover needs checking, not that you definitely do not have it. [1]

Keep these points in mind

  • Work and your union are two separate sources.
  • An offer is not confirmation of insurance.
  • Missing documents mean Unverified.

STEP BY STEP

How to check your cover

  1. Ask which agreement covers you

Ask HR or payroll for the name of the collective agreement and a statement of your insurance cover. Also ask whether your employer has other group policies. The agreement and your employment terms determine which documents you need to read.

  2. Check your union membership benefits

Separate what is included, what you have chosen to take out and what is simply offered at a discount. Check who is insured and the period the statement covers. Your membership fee alone does not show everything that is included.

  3. Spell out the abbreviations

TGL is occupational group life insurance and may pay a benefit on death. AGS is sickness insurance under a collective agreement and may supplement payments during sick leave. TFA is work injury insurance. Names and cover differ between collective agreements; these are examples, not a list of what every employee has.

  4. Collect the statements and terms

Ask for both your insurance statement and the terms it refers to. Note the start date, amounts, age limits and what happens if you change employer or union. Keep the contact details of someone who can confirm anything that is unclear.

WHO PAYS WHEN YOU ARE ILL?
A simplified picture for employees. How much is paid depends on salary, agreements and terms. The self-employed have other rules.

One source can provide several kinds of cover

A group agreement may contain several parts with different terms. Work injury cover, for example, is not the same as accident insurance in your free time. Life cover concerns payments to survivors, not medical care.

Read each part separately. Instead of simply writing ‘insured through work’, record what the statement actually shows and what you still need to ask about.

Add the documents to My Forsio

In My Forsio, you can add documents so that cover from different sources can form part of the same overview. Documents from your employer and union need to be added separately.

The questions under About you help fill in what the documents do not make clear. Unverified is a prompt to check, not a statement that insurance is missing.

Fictional example

One bill does not show everything.

A person has added a private policy document and a membership statement, but is waiting for documents from HR.

Private accident insurance
Current policy document
Membership insurance
Listed in the membership statement
TGL through work
Unverified

The next step is to ask the employer about TGL, rather than assume life cover is missing.

Common questions

Do I have to belong to a union to have cover through work?

Distinguish insurance provided through your employment under a collective agreement from insurance that comes with union membership. Ask your employer which agreement covers you; not being a union member does not itself prove that workplace insurance is missing. [2][1]

What happens when I change jobs?

Check when your old cover ends and your new cover begins. Some personal insurance policies through a group have rules on continuing cover. Ask the insurer to explain what applies before drawing conclusions from an old statement. [1]
