Can more than one accident policy pay?

Fixed amounts can be paid from several policies. The same cost is not reimbursed more than once. Here is how to tell the difference in your terms.

THE SHORT ANSWER

Yes, several accident policies may, in some cases, pay for the same injury. This can include amounts for a permanent impairment. The conditions of each policy must be met.

Costs work differently. The same treatment or travel expense is not reimbursed more than once. Two documents with ‘accident’ on the front are therefore not enough to call all the cover an unnecessary duplication. [1][2]

Keep these points in mind

  • Distinguish fixed amounts from reimbursement of costs.
  • Compare each type of payment separately.
  • A sum insured is not a promised payout.

STEP BY STEP

How to check your cover

  1. Find all your current accident policies

Collect your private policy documents and check for cover through work, your union, school or an association. Note who is insured and the period of cover. A document for an old period should not count as an additional current policy.

  2. Separate the types of payment

Make two columns: amounts calculated under the policy terms, and reimbursement of actual costs. Put permanent impairment benefits in the first, for example, and treatment costs in the second. Read the text behind the heading if the distinction is unclear.

    [1][2]
  3. Compare when cover applies

Check whether each policy covers you around the clock or only in certain settings. Read the definition of an accident and any activity exclusions. Also compare the age when cover ends and whether the sum insured decreases with age.

    [1]
  4. Keep the evidence after an injury

Keep receipts and details of the event. Ask the insurers concerned which reports and certificates they need. Disclose other compensation when asked. One insurer assessing the injury does not mean it automatically does so for the others.

    [2][3]

Do not add up the amounts as a promise

A sum insured may be the basis for a calculation. The payment depends on the injury and the method set out in the terms. Two sums on policy documents are therefore not the same as a combined amount you will receive after every accident.

Cover from several sources can still serve a purpose. Reaching a conclusion requires reading what is included, not simply counting the policies.

See how the policies relate to each other

My Forsio brings your insurance documents together. When the terms are included, you can read the source behind a finding and distinguish fixed benefits from costs.

Claim check Beta helps you find relevant terms within the areas the feature supports. It does not decide whether an injury is covered or calculate a guaranteed payout. The insurer makes that assessment under the agreement.

Fictional example

Two policies. Two types of payment.

A person has private accident insurance and another policy through an association.

Private policy
Amount for permanent injury
Association's policy
Amount for permanent injury
The same treatment receipt
The cost is reimbursed once

Both may assess a claim for a fixed benefit. This does not mean the same expense can be paid twice.

Common questions

Are two accident policies always an overlap?

No. Fixed amounts may be paid from both, while some parts covering costs overlap. Compare the parts separately before drawing a conclusion about the policies. [1]

Does every injury count as an accident?

No. The terms define an accident and set specific limits. Having pain or an injury is not enough on its own to determine which part of the cover might apply. [1]
