THE SHORT ANSWER

The travel cover in home insurance only lasts a set number of days per trip. We read the terms in force at eight insurers on 1 November 2026. At seven of them the travel cover lasts 45 days, and at one it lasts 60 days.

The table shows the number of days, when a trip in Sweden counts and whether the cover can be extended, with the edition of the terms for each insurer. Your own policy schedule shows which insurer, level and terms apply to you. [19]

The figures apply to home insurance for private individuals. Each row is based on the insurer's own terms and, for extensions, on the insurer's own website.

Terms in force on 1 November 2026. Higher levels and add-ons such as extended travel cover do not add days at any of the insurers. At the insurers that sell house insurance, the house terms have the same travel cover rules. Trygg-Hansa's terms set no day limit for trips within the Nordic countries, while its website gives 45 days both in Sweden and abroad.

Keep these points in mind

  • At seven of the eight insurers the travel cover lasts 45 days per trip, at one it lasts 60 days.
  • When a trip in Sweden counts differs: after one overnight stay, two overnight stays or more than two days, depending on the insurer.
  • Higher levels do not add days. Longer trips need an extension or a separate policy.

STEP BY STEP

How to check your cover

  1. Check your insurer, level and terms

Take out your policy schedule. It shows the insurer, the level and the terms that apply to you. Then compare it with your insurer's row in the table.

Check that travel cover is included in your level. At one of the insurers in the table, the lowest level includes no travel cover, because it only applies in the home.

  2. Count the days from departure

The days count from the day you leave your home or home town, and the trip ends when you are back. Your terms set out the exact wording.

At six of the insurers, a shorter visit home, under 30 days, does not start a new period if you are going back to the same destination. Two of the insurers' terms mention no such limit. Read more in the guide to extended travel insurance.

    [1][5][7][10][13][15][20]
  3. Check when a trip in Sweden counts

Trips outside the Nordic countries are covered at all eight insurers, even without an overnight stay. For trips in Sweden, and at several insurers also in the rest of the Nordic countries, the rules differ: at some insurers one overnight stay away from your home town is enough, at others the trip must be meant to last more than two days or include at least two overnight stays.

A day trip in Sweden therefore does not count as a trip at any of the insurers. The table shows the rule for each insurer.

    [1][3][5][7][10][13][15][17]
  4. Arrange the extension in time

If you will be away longer than the travel cover's days, the cover needs to be extended or topped up with separate travel insurance. The rules differ: at some insurers you can extend during the trip within the first 45 days, at others you buy a separate policy for the rest of the trip.

Konsumenternas wrote in 2024 that the extension must be arranged before the trip starts. Several insurers' own pages now allow extending during the trip, so read your insurer's rules. More on extensions and their cost is in the guide to extended travel insurance.

How we read the terms

We downloaded each insurer's current home insurance terms from its own website on 1 November 2026 and read the travel cover sections in full. The details on extensions come from the insurers' own travel insurance pages.

For the seven insurers in Konsumenternas' comparison of home insurance, the number of days matches the comparison. Terms change. The edition in the table shows which version each figure comes from, and your policy schedule shows which version applies to you.

Fictional example

50 days away, 45 days of travel cover.

Amir is travelling for 50 days. His home insurance gives travel cover for 45 days per trip.

The first 45 days are covered by the home insurance. For the last five days Amir needs an extension, arranged within the insurer's deadline.

Common questions

How many days does the travel cover in home insurance last?

At seven of the eight insurers in the table it lasts 45 days per trip, and at ICA Försäkring 60 days, according to the terms in force on 1 November 2026. Konsumenternas describes 45 days as standard at most insurers. [5][19][20]

How many days does the travel cover last at ICA Försäkring?

60 days per trip, both in the basic cover and with the Rese Plus add-on, according to its home terms of 16 June 2025. Trips within the Nordic countries are covered if they are meant to last more than two days. For longer trips there is a separate long-trip policy for trips of up to 365 days. [5][6]

Does every home insurance policy at If Skadeförsäkring include travel cover?

No. According to the insurer's pre-purchase information, its basic level only applies in the home and includes no travel cover. At the other levels the travel cover lasts 45 days per trip, for trips abroad or when you intend at least two overnight stays. [7][8]

How long does the travel cover last at Länsförsäkringar Stockholm?

45 days per trip at all three levels, according to the H25 terms and the insurer's description of its levels. A trip in the Nordic countries counts when you stay overnight away from your home town. For trips longer than 45 days the insurer refers to a separate policy for a temporary stay abroad. [10][11][12]

Does Trygg-Hansa's travel cover last 45 days in Sweden too?

The terms of 1 June 2023 limit trips outside the Nordic countries to the first 45 days and set no day limit for trips within the Nordic countries. The insurer's website gives 45 days both in Sweden and abroad. Ask the insurer what applies to your trip. [17][18]

Can I extend the travel cover once I have left?

It depends on the insurer. Dina Försäkringar and If Skadeförsäkring allow extending during the trip within the first 45 days, and at If a seven-day waiting period applies after that. Folksam's extension must be bought and paid before day 45. Länsförsäkringar Stockholm refers to a separate policy for a temporary stay abroad. [2][9][4][12]
