THE SHORT ANSWER
The travel cover in home insurance lasts only a set number of days per trip. According to Konsumenternas, 45 days is the standard with most insurers, and with two insurers the cover lasts 60 days. The number of days in your own policy is stated in the terms.
If you will be away longer, Konsumenternas says the travel cover needs to be extended, or supplemented with a separate travel policy. This guide shows how the days are counted, what an extension usually requires and what applies once you have already left. Studying, working or moving abroad is covered in a separate guide. [2][1]
Keep these points in mind
- The days are counted for each trip, from the day you leave home.
- An extension needs to be arranged before the travel cover runs out, often before departure.
- An extension may have its own limits and requirements on health and residence registration.
STEP BY STEP
How to check your cover
Count the days from departure
Write down the day you leave home and the day you are back. In one insurer's terms from December 2025, the 45 days are counted from the day you leave the insured home, and the trip ends when you return to your home town. The journey back counts too. Another insurer writes that you need an extension if you land in Sweden on day 46, even if the journey home started on day 45.
A short visit home does not always start new days. According to Konsumenternas, most insurers require you to stay at home for 30 days before new days start counting. Otherwise the whole stay counts as one long trip, and the cover then needs to apply for the whole period.
[4][7][2]Arrange the extension before the days run out
According to Konsumenternas, every insurer lets you extend the number of days for an extra cost, and this needs to be done before the trip starts. If you already know before departure that the trip will be longer, that is when to contact the insurer. Ask for the start date, the end date, the people covered and the area the extension applies to.
The extension may be a separate agreement. In one insurer's terms from October 2025, it is taken out for named travellers, with its own policy document and for a set geographical area. The total travel time there may be at most 365 days. Keep that policy document together with the home insurance terms.
[2][5]If you are already abroad: read the deadline
The rules differ between insurers. One writes on its website that the extension must be made before day 45 of the trip, otherwise a seven-day waiting period applies, and that it takes effect once it is paid. Another writes that the extended policy must be taken out and paid before the first 45 days have passed, and that it cannot be taken out afterwards.
Konsumenternas writes that it is often too late to get insured once you are already abroad and your travel insurance has expired. If your home insurer refuses extended travel cover, some insurers may offer a policy for the rest of your stay. According to Konsumenternas, such a policy can be expensive, and cover usually starts only after a waiting period.
[6][7][1]Check health, residence registration and the home policy
Read what the terms say about conditions you had before departure. In the terms from October 2025, the policy does not pay for care that was already needed when the trip started, or for a worsening of the same or similar symptoms you sought care for in the three months before departure. If you have an illness, the insurer's emergency centre can carry out a medical pre-assessment, Konsumenternas writes.
Also read the residence requirements. In the terms from December 2025, the policy only applies to incidents in Sweden if you are not registered as resident and living in Sweden. According to the Swedish Tax Agency, you must report a move if you plan to stay abroad for a year or more. The home policy also needs to be in force for the whole trip. One insurer writes that a renewal falling during the trip must be paid for the extension to apply.
[5][3][4][8][6]
Extended travel cover or a separate travel policy?
An extension takes over where the home insurance days end. One insurer describes the travel cover as applying on days 1–45 and the extension as protecting you from day 46. It describes a six-month trip the same way: the home insurance covers the first 45 days and the extension the rest. Konsumenternas also mentions a separate travel policy that takes over when the home insurance ends.
An extension does not always include everything that applies in the first days. In the terms from December 2025, compensation for unused travel costs applies during the first 45 days of the trip, but not during an extension. In the terms from October 2025, trip interruption is not covered for events after 90 consecutive days away from your home town. So read which parts the extension includes, not only how long it lasts.
[7][2][4][5]What affects the price of an extension?
There is no common price. Two insurers write that the price depends on the destination, how long you are away and the travellers' ages. One of them also mentions how many people the extension covers. The same insurer writes that the first 45 days are included in the home insurance and that you pay for the extended period.
Also read what applies if your plans change. One insurer writes that you can get back the cost of the part you did not use if you come home earlier than planned. If a delayed journey home makes the trip longer than 45 days, the same insurer says an extension is needed for the extra days.
[6][7]Put the extension beside the home insurance
Keep the home insurance terms and the policy document for the extension in My Forsio. You then have the documents in one place, and each detail shows the passage it came from. If the extension's policy document is missing, cover after day 45 is Not verified, not confirmed as missing.
Forsio does not decide whether your trip is insured, whether an extension is needed or whether a claim is paid. The insurer decides that. Forsio is not an insurance intermediary and does not provide insurance advice.
Fictional example
Four months in Asia. Two documents.
Elin is travelling for four months and puts her home insurance beside an offer of an extension.
- Travel cover in the home insurance
- 45 days from departure
- Extension from day 46
- Not verifiedAn offer is not a policy document.
- Renewal of the home insurance
- Falls during the tripPotential gapRead what is required for the extension to apply.
The first 45 days are confirmed in the documents. The rest of the trip needs a policy document for the extension, and the home insurance needs to stay in force throughout.
Common questions
What applies if the trip is longer than 45 days?
According to Konsumenternas, the travel cover in home insurance usually lasts 45 days. If you will be away longer, you need to extend the travel cover before you leave or buy a separate travel policy. With two insurers, the travel cover lasts 60 days. Your terms state the number of days that applies to you. [1][2]
Can I extend my travel insurance after the trip has started?
It depends on the insurer. Konsumenternas writes that the extension needs to be made before the trip starts. With one insurer it is possible before day 45 of the trip, and a seven-day waiting period applies if you extend later. With another, the extension must be taken out and paid before the first 45 days have passed. Contact your insurer before the days run out. [2][6][7]
Can I buy travel insurance when I am already abroad?
According to Konsumenternas, it is often too late once you are already abroad and your travel insurance has expired. If your home insurer refuses extended travel cover, some insurers may offer a policy for the rest of your stay. It can be expensive, and cover usually starts only after a waiting period. [1]
What does extended travel insurance cost?
There is no fixed price. Two insurers say the price depends on factors such as the destination, the length of the trip and the travellers' ages. Ask for a price for your own travel plan, and check that the period in the policy document covers the whole trip. [6][7]
Is there travel insurance for 60 or 90 days, or for six months?
With most insurers, home insurance travel cover lasts 45 days, and with two insurers 60 days, according to Konsumenternas. Longer trips need an extension. In one insurer's terms, the extension can be taken out for a total travel time of at most 365 days, but trip interruption is not covered after 90 consecutive days away from your home town. Read the limits in your own policy. [2][5]
Do I need to be registered as resident in Sweden for the travel cover to apply?
The terms may require it. In one insurer's terms, the policy only applies to incidents in Sweden if you are not registered as resident and living there. According to the Swedish Tax Agency, you must report a move if you plan to stay abroad for a year or more, even if the stay was first meant to be shorter. [4][8]
