THE SHORT ANSWER
Moving across a border changes more than your address. Population registration, entitlement under a public system and your private insurance agreements are separate questions. An answer to one does not settle the others.
Start with where you are moving, when and why. Work, study, retirement and accompanying family may need different checks. Do not assume a Swedish personal identity number or an old policy statement confirms cover after the move. [1][6]
Keep these points in mind
- Population registration and insurance agreements are separate questions.
- Get confirmation for every person and the whole period.
- A permanent move is not an ordinary holiday.
STEP BY STEP
How to check your cover
Write down the circumstances of the move
Note the departure date, arrival date, country and planned length of stay. Include whether you will work, study or accompany someone. Also list homes you are keeping and the people moving. Use the same details when contacting authorities and insurers.
The Swedish Tax Agency says a planned stay outside Sweden of at least one year must be reported as a move abroad. Separate rules apply within the Nordic region. When moving to Sweden, someone planning to stay at least one year usually needs population registration. Read the agency's requirements for your circumstances.
[4][5]Check social insurance separately
Contact the Swedish Social Insurance Agency about the information needed when moving, working or studying. The agency assesses whether Swedish social insurance applies and for which benefits. Citizenship or retaining a personal identity number is not enough to establish this.
Give accurate information about each accompanying person. Family members do not necessarily fall under the same country's rules. Also ask the responsible authority in the other country which decisions or certificates are needed. A private policy statement does not replace that assessment.
[1][2][3]Ask each insurer to confirm continuation
Review home, personal and any vehicle policies separately. Ask about residence, geographical scope, work and time limits. Get written confirmation with start and end dates. An unchanged premium or continued billing alone does not show that the move is covered.
If, for example, explains that Swedish home and personal policies can be affected by moving abroad. This is one insurer's example, not a shared condition across all providers. Read your own agreements before drawing conclusions about what continues or ends.
[6]Put the old and new periods side by side
Compare the final day of previous cover with the first day of the new cover. Also check the journey when moving and any short return visits. An agreement for a home in Sweden does not necessarily insure the new home abroad.
For work or study, also ask the employer or university for the actual insurance statement. Check the people, duties and leisure periods it covers. A job or study place does not itself confirm the full insurance cover for the move.
[8][7]
Travel cover does not confirm cover for residence
A travel certificate may show cover for a defined trip without applying when you settle in another country. Check the purpose of the trip, country of residence and agreement's requirements together. Extending a trip is not automatically the same as an approved move abroad.
When moving to Sweden, similarly check what a previous foreign agreement covers after arrival. Ask the insurer to explain geographical limits and residence conditions. A foreign document is neither confirmed valid nor confirmed invalid simply because of its language.
[7][8]Bring documents together, keep decisions separate
Keep current insurance documents in My Forsio and update relevant details under About you. Read periods and limitations in the originals when reviewing your picture. A missing statement needs confirmation from whoever is responsible for the insurance.
Forsio does not determine residence, public benefits or which country's rules apply. The overview uses the documents it can read; it does not guarantee support for every foreign document or language. Ask the insurer for a clear explanation if anything remains uncertain.
Fictional example
Three statements answering different questions.
Alex is moving from Sweden for work and still has an older Swedish policy statement.
- Population registration
- Move reported
- Social insurance
- Confirmation needed from the authority
- Private cover after moving
- Unverified
Reporting the move and having the older statement do not confirm insurance cover in the new country.
