THE SHORT ANSWER
An extended holiday, an exchange term and a job abroad raise three different insurance questions. Start with your whole itinerary: dates, countries and what you will do. A travel certificate without that check does not tell you enough.
Travel cover in a home policy lasts for a limited period and is normally intended for private trips. Study, placements and work need separate checks. Your university or employer may already provide cover, but ask for the actual statement. [1][2]
Keep these points in mind
- Match cover to both the length and purpose of the trip.
- Confirm an extension before you need it.
- EHIC and travel insurance are different things.
STEP BY STEP
How to check your cover
List the full period and every activity
Include outward and return travel and any private trips before or after study or work. Also specify placements, volunteering and other work. Holiday insurance does not become work insurance because both trips are in the same country.
Read how travel days are counted and how long your agreement covers. Do not treat 45 days as a rule for every policy. If, for example, specifies 45 days for its private holiday trips; your policy may have a different limit.
[2][3]Ask for confirmation beyond the limit
Contact the insurer before departure if your trip exceeds the ordinary cover period. Ask for start and end dates, payment requirements and who is covered. Keep the confirmation with the full terms.
If plans change during your trip, contact the insurer before current cover expires. Do not assume you can buy cover retrospectively for a period or event that has already passed. An application is not the same as a confirmed agreement.
[1][3]Check your university's or employer's policy
Ask the university or employer for an insurance statement, terms and claim contact. Check who is covered, which duties and leisure activities are included and whether accompanying people have any cover. A study place or employment contract is not an insurance certificate.
Kammarkollegiet's Student UT can be taken out by the university. It has its own rules for the study period, direct travel, leisure and visits to other countries. Do not assume it covers every student or a private tour after the term.
[2][4]Discuss known illness with the insurer
If you have an illness or symptoms before departure, ask the insurer how the terms apply to related costs. It may need a pre-travel medical assessment through its assistance service. Ask for written confirmation and read which events it addresses.
An insurance decision is not medical clearance to travel. Health and treatment questions belong with healthcare professionals; payment questions belong with the insurer. Do not change or postpone care to try to meet an insurance condition.
[5][6]
EHIC does not replace all travel cover
The European Health Insurance Card covers necessary care within the public healthcare system in participating countries, under local rules. It is not an insurance certificate for luggage, cancellation or every cost of returning home.
Studying or working abroad can also affect which country's social insurance covers you. the Swedish Social Insurance Agency assesses this based on your situation. A Swedish personal identity number or previous EHIC does not, by itself, determine what applies during a new stay.
[7][8]Put the periods side by side in your documents
Gather your home policy terms and statements from the university, employer or separate travel policy in My Forsio. Read the documents' periods and limitations when reviewing your insurance picture. If a statement is missing, that part needs confirmation.
Forsio does not confirm entitlement to public healthcare or carry out pre-travel medical assessments. Do not rely only on an old travel certificate for a new extended trip. Ask the responsible insurer about anything your current documents do not establish.
Fictional example
A term and an extra month need two checks.
A student has an insurance statement for the study period and plans a private trip afterwards.
- Study period
- Statement available, terms need reading
- Private trip afterwards
- Unverified
- Next check
- Dates, countries and purpose
A statement for the studies does not automatically confirm cover for the private trip.
Common questions
Do travel cover days restart after a short visit home?
Do not assume so. Ask the insurer how interruptions and return travel are counted under your agreement. Check the whole itinerary, even if you plan to return to Sweden briefly. [3]
Is the university's statement enough if I take a part-time job?
That needs checking. Ask whether the specific work is covered and check the employer's policies too. Study, work and leisure can have different rules. Also ask the Swedish Social Insurance Agency whether the work affects your social insurance. [4][8][2]
