THE SHORT ANSWER
Moving out changes more than your address. According to Konsumenternas, your parents' home insurance normally no longer covers you once you have moved out, whether you move to a rented flat, become a lodger or take a room in student housing.
Home insurance protects more than your belongings. According to Konsumenternas, it includes travel cover, legal expenses cover, liability cover and assault cover, among other things. This guide shows what you can check in your own documents, from home insurance and child insurance to cover through school or work. How cover works for different kinds of housing is explained in the guide to home insurance when renting, subletting or in student housing. [1][4]
Keep these points in mind
- Your parents' home insurance normally no longer covers you once you have moved out.
- Your own home insurance also includes liability cover, legal expenses cover and travel cover.
- A university's accident insurance applies during study time and the trip there, not in your free time.
STEP BY STEP
How to check your cover
Find out when your parents' policy stops covering you
According to Konsumenternas, a student is not covered by the parents' home insurance after moving out and registering as resident in the study town. The Swedish Tax Agency says that university students must be registered where they reside, meaning where they spend their nightly rest, and must report the move to their address in the study town.
If you are under 18, Konsumenternas says you may still be included in your parents' home insurance while staying in another town, but this needs to be checked with the insurer. Several insurers also require everyone who is to be covered, children included, to be named in the policy document. Ask your parents to check their document if you are unsure.
[4][6][3]Read who and what your own home insurance covers
Konsumenternas says that if you sublet or are a lodger, you are normally not covered by the landlord's home insurance, because you do not share a household. With a few insurers, a lodger can share the landlord's home insurance. According to Konsumenternas, the legal expenses cover and liability cover then do not apply to a dispute with the landlord.
Insurers often sell special student home insurance at a discounted price. According to Konsumenternas, these policies have lower insured amounts than regular home insurance, and some are designed to cover only you. If someone moves in with you, the two of you may then need a policy that covers you both. Read the address, the people named and the insured amount in the policy document.
[3][2]See what liability, legal expenses and travel cover do
According to Konsumenternas, home insurance can pay if someone claims damages from you. It can also pay a lawyer's costs if you end up in a dispute. These are the liability cover and the legal expenses cover, and the terms show the deductible, limits and exclusions. Read more in the guide to liability and legal expenses cover.
With home insurance, Konsumenternas says you have basic travel cover for 45 days. If you are going to study or work abroad, there are special policies for that. How the days are counted and what travel cover usually includes is explained in the guide to travel cover in home insurance.
[5][2]Go through child insurance, accidents and cover through school or work
If your parents took out a child and youth insurance policy for you, Konsumenternas says it usually runs until you are 25, and you can pay for it yourself from the age of 18. Ask your parents for the policy document and note the end date and who is named as the policyholder.
According to Konsumenternas, universities have accident insurance that applies during study time and on the trip to and from the place of study. Group policies may also exist through work, school or a membership, but Konsumenternas notes that policies through an employer end when you stop working. [2][8]
Sharing a home with a friend or a partner
According to Konsumenternas, friends who share a home can have a joint home insurance policy if they share a household and are all registered at the address, but insurers may have other requirements. A cohabiting partner or spouse is often co-insured if they reside and are registered at the same address.
If you move in with someone who already has home insurance, Konsumenternas says you may still need to tell the insurer that you are to be included. Being registered at the new address does not automatically mean the policy covers you. Check the names in the policy document.
[3][1]The university's insurance covers study time
Kammarkollegiet, a Swedish government agency, describes the insurance for university students as accident insurance that applies if you have an accident and suffer a bodily injury. It applies during study hours on the school's premises and grounds, and while you are on your way to or from school. It does not apply when you are at school in your free time, or if you make a stop on the way.
According to Konsumenternas, you have to report an injury yourself, both to the student insurance through the school and to your own policy. With Kammarkollegiet, both you and the university fill in the claim form, and if you claim for expenses you need to send in receipts.
[7][2]Keep your own documents together from your first move
Keep your home insurance, any child or accident policies and statements from school or work in My Forsio. Each detail is shown with the passage it came from, so you can read the address, the people named and the amounts yourself. If a document is missing, for example the terms, the detail is shown as Not verified, not as confirmed absent.
Forsio does not decide which policies you need, whether your parents' policy still covers you or whether a claim is paid. The insurer decides that under the agreement. Forsio is not an insurance intermediary and does not provide insurance advice.
Fictional example
New address, three things to read.
Noah is 20 and has moved to a student flat in another city. He puts his documents side by side.
- Own home insurance
- The student flat, Noah only
- Child insurance through his parents
- Not verifiedAsk for the policy document and the end date.
- Accidents in free time
- No document on filePotential gapThe university's policy covers study time and the trip there.
The home insurance for the new flat is confirmed. The child insurance needs confirming, and the university's policy does not answer what applies in free time.
Common questions
Does my parents' home insurance cover me while I study in another town?
Normally not. According to Konsumenternas, a student is not covered by the parents' home insurance after moving out and registering as resident in the study town. If you are under 18, you may still be included in your parents' home insurance while staying in another town, but this needs to be checked with the insurer. [4][3]
Which insurance do you need when you move out?
Forsio does not decide that. Konsumenternas says that you are not covered by your parents' home insurance once you move out. Start with what already exists: a child and youth policy from your parents, the university's accident insurance and any group policies through work, school or a membership. Then read what each document covers. [2][8]
Is there special home insurance for students?
Yes. According to Konsumenternas, insurers often sell student home insurance at a discounted price. These policies have lower insured amounts than regular home insurance but may be enough if you do not own many valuable things. Some cover only you, so read which people the policy document includes. [3][2]
As a lodger, am I covered by the landlord's home insurance?
Normally not, because you do not share a household, according to Konsumenternas. With a few insurers, a lodger can share the landlord's home insurance. The legal expenses cover and liability cover then do not apply to a dispute with the landlord. [3][2]
Does the university's insurance apply in my free time?
No. According to Kammarkollegiet, the insurance for students applies during study hours on the school's premises and grounds, and on the way to or from school. It does not apply when you are at school in your free time, or if you make a stop on the way. Konsumenternas says the accident insurance through universities applies during study time and on the trip to and from the place of study. [7][2]
How long does the child insurance my parents took out last?
According to Konsumenternas, a child and youth policy taken out by your parents usually runs until you are 25, and you can pay for it yourself from the age of 18. The exact end date is in the policy document and the terms. [2]
