THE SHORT ANSWER
When a moving company damages or loses something, your claim goes to the company first. According to the Swedish Consumer Agency, you have the right to claim compensation, and the company should get the chance to repair what can be repaired. What you need to be able to show is that the moving company caused the damage.
The Swedish Consumer Agency describes Bohag 2010, the general terms for household removals, as an agreement between the agency and the moving industry. Its content is regarded as good market practice and covers, among other things, the company's liability, limits on compensation and how to complain. Your home insurance is a separate question that may become relevant for what the company is not liable for. [1][2][3]
Keep these points in mind
- A claim for damaged belongings goes to the moving company first.
- Check your belongings promptly and complain in writing.
- Home insurance and the company's liability answer different questions.
STEP BY STEP
How to check your cover
Check the agreement and terms before the move
Ask for a written agreement showing what is included: addresses, packing, any storage, price and timing. Ask whether the company uses Bohag 2010. Under those terms, you are to receive a copy of the agreement before the job begins.
Also check that the company holds a transport permit from the Swedish Transport Agency. The Swedish Consumer Agency points out that without one, the company's insurance may not apply if something happens, such as a traffic accident. Bohag 2010 states that the company ought to hold carrier's liability insurance covering the terms. Ask the company which insurance it holds.
[2][3]List valuable and fragile items
Bohag 2010 expects you to provide the information that matters for the move, including particularly valuable or fragile items. Particularly valuable there means an item that can be assumed to be worth more than half a price base amount. Fragile includes glass, porcelain, older items and electronics, for example. If you have made a list, the company is to check against it when the job starts and when it is completed.
Cash, securities, jewellery and similar valuables are not part of the job unless otherwise agreed. The Swedish Consumer Agency describes photographing or filming your belongings before the company collects them. The images can show their condition before the move if you later need to complain.
[3][2]Inspect your belongings and complain in writing
Bohag 2010 says you ought to inspect your belongings and check for transport damage as soon as possible after the move is finished. Keep damaged items and packaging, or photograph them. According to the Swedish Consumer Agency, you need to be able to show that the moving company caused the damage in order to make a claim.
Contact the company in writing, by email for example, describing the damage and what you are claiming. Attach photographs. Under Bohag 2010, you must complain within a reasonable time after you noticed or ought to have noticed the damage, and no later than three years after the job ended. The three-year limit does not replace the reasonable-time requirement.
[3][1]Read what the company's compensation covers
Under Bohag 2010, the company is liable for damage to or loss of your belongings unless it shows that the event was due to something beyond its control. The company is also liable for damage to other property during the job, in your home for example, unless it shows that the damage was not caused by its negligence. Compensation is based on the item's market value when the damage occurred.
Compensation is capped at 20 price base amounts per household and does not cover sentimental value or indirect loss. It can be reduced or lost if the damage results from your own packing, incorrect information or sensitive electronics damaged despite professional handling. Read your agreement to see which terms apply if the company does not use Bohag 2010.

Where the company's liability ends, home insurance may become relevant
Bohag 2010 refers consumers to their own insurance for belongings in cases where the moving company is not liable to pay compensation. That might include damage caused by your own packing, for example. So check what your home insurance says about moving and transport, and which limits and excesses apply.
Konsumenternas describes home insurance often including moving cover that can apply at both the old and new address for between 14 and 45 days, and in some cases cover for transporting belongings during the move. Your own policy may also include all-risk cover. Read the scope in your agreement; moving cover does not by itself confirm that everything damaged in transit will be paid for.
[3][4]Keep the policy schedule close when you complain
Keep your home insurance policy schedule and terms in My Forsio. You then have the documents in one place when reading what the moving cover includes. Keep the moving company's agreement, the photographs and your written complaint together so you can find them if you need to take the matter further.
Forsio does not decide whether the moving company is liable and does not handle your complaint. The company answers the claim, and the insurer assesses an insurance claim. Moving cover that is not shown in the documents means Unverified, not that cover is absent.
Fictional example
Three things to settle after moving day.
Noor hired a moving company. When unpacking, a table is scratched and a lamp is missing.
- Complaint to the company
- Sent by email with photographs
- Company's compensation
- UnverifiedThe company has not yet replied to the claim.
- Moving cover in home insurance
- UnverifiedRead the terms on transport.
The example shows questions to get answered. No one has yet decided who pays for what.
Common questions
What is moving insurance?
The term is used for several things. It can mean the moving cover in your home insurance, the moving company's liability insurance or separate insurance for the transport. Bohag 2010 mentions that the company can in some cases help arrange separate insurance for the transport, at your expense. Ask which one is meant before assuming something is insured. [4][3]
Does the moving company need liability insurance?
Bohag 2010 states that the company ought to hold carrier's liability insurance covering the terms, and Konsumenternas describes it as important that a moving company has liability insurance. Ask the company which insurance it holds. Your claim still goes to the company, which is liable under the agreement. [3][4]
How long do I have to report damage?
Under Bohag 2010, you must notify the company within a reasonable time after you noticed or ought to have noticed the damage, and no later than three years after the job ended. Check your belongings promptly after the move and complain in writing. If the company uses other terms, read what your agreement says. [3]
What if the moving company refuses to pay for the damage?
Bohag 2010 says the parties are first to try to reach an agreement, and that a municipal consumer guidance service can help. If you cannot agree, the National Board for Consumer Disputes (ARN) can review the dispute at your request. According to the Swedish Consumer Agency, you must file within one year of first complaining to the company, and the disputed amount must exceed ARN's value limit. The dispute can also be heard in court. [3][1]
Does home insurance apply if friends help me move?
If a friend drops something of yours, Konsumenternas says it may be a matter for the friend's home insurance. Your own policy may also include all-risk cover that can pay for damage. Read the terms of the agreements that may be relevant and ask the insurers if anything is unclear. [4]
