THE SHORT ANSWER
Moving changes more than the address on your policy letter. For a while, you may have keys to two homes and belongings in several places. Start by describing that period to the insurer, rather than just the moving day.
Temporary moving cover may be included, but its scope varies. An insurer receiving your new address does not by itself confirm that the correct home, people and add-ons are covered by the contract. [1][2]
Keep these points in mind
- Compare when you gain and give up access to each home.
- Separate your belongings, the property and the transport.
- Ask the insurer to confirm cover during the transition.
STEP BY STEP
How to check your cover
Write down the addresses and dates
Find your current policy letter. Note when you gain access to the new home, when your belongings move and when you leave the old home. Add any time in a storage unit. This gives you a simple timeline to check with the insurer.
Check the policy period in both the old and new documents. Note which address each document relates to, so a new letter is not mistaken for a second contract.
Check what applies at both addresses
Ask which parts of the cover apply during the move and when the temporary cover begins. As one insurer-specific example, If describes 45 days of cover for belongings at both addresses, subject to conditions. This is not a general rule for every home policy.
If you are moving into a house, distinguish home insurance for you and your belongings from buildings insurance. For a tenant-owned apartment, ask separately about the supplement for tenant-owned apartments. Get confirmation for each property, not just the moving boxes.
[2][4]Ask separately about transport and storage
Explain whether you are moving yourself, getting help from friends or hiring a removal company. Konsumenternas specifically highlights checking the removal company's liability insurance. Ask for written information about what applies to your booking.
For storage, ask whether the location is covered, which damage may qualify, the limits and any locking requirements. Folksam, for example, describes cover for belongings at another address. That does not confirm that every storage facility or item is covered by your contract.
[1][3]Check the updated policy letter
Ask the insurer to confirm the address, housing type, people and dates after the change. Compare its confirmation with your timeline. If anything remains unclear, ask a specific follow-up question, such as whether your belongings are covered in storage between two dates.
Notifying Skatteverket of your move is a separate task. Do this before moving or no later than one week afterwards. That notification does not replace checking what your insurance contract covers.
[5][6]
Two addresses do not automatically mean duplicate cover
If you keep your previous home, ask how it should remain insured. If, for example, explains that two homes may need two policies. Temporary moving cover should not be read as a promise of ongoing cover for both.
Do not decide whether cover overlaps by counting policy letters alone. Start with the location, period and contents. Changes and any end dates need to be confirmed by the insurer.
[2]Keep the documents together in My Forsio
In My Forsio, you can see policy periods, open documents and distinguish current policies from previous versions. Add the updated letter and review your housing answers in About you when your situation changes.
This helps you keep track of what the documents show. Forsio does not notify Skatteverket or your insurer of a move, or change your insurance contract. Updating an answer in About you does not confirm new cover.
Fictional example
One move, three locations to check
Robin gains access to the new home before leaving the old one. Some furniture is temporarily kept in a rented storage unit.
- Previous home
- Keys kept until moving outWhat cover applies until then?
- New home
- Access before moving dayWhen does cover begin?
- Storage unit
- UnverifiedAsk about location, dates and the limit.
The example sets out questions to resolve. It does not show real policy terms or confirmed gaps.
Common questions
Does moving cover last equally long with every insurer?
No. Read the period in your own contract. Konsumenternas describes differences between home policies. Also check when the period starts and what the cover includes. [1]
Is notifying my new address enough?
Check the policy letter too. Your registered address and insurance contract are different records; a new address alone does not establish which people or add-ons the contract covers. [6][5]
Does Forsio move my home insurance for me?
No. You make the change with the insurer. My Forsio brings your documents together and shows the information they contain.
