Pregnancy insurance and insurance for newborns: how do they differ?

Free or paid pregnancy insurance, start dates and child insurance. Read the cover your documents describe and what needs a separate confirmation.

THE SHORT ANSWER

Pregnancy insurance and child insurance are different agreements. A pregnancy policy schedule does not by itself show that the child has child insurance. Even pregnancy cover lasting beyond the birth has its own scope and end date.

This guide helps you read existing policies or offers. Pregnancy insurance is an optional product. Its absence from your documents is not itself a confirmed gap and does not mean you must choose a particular policy. [1]

Keep these points in mind

  • Free and paid pregnancy policies contain different cover.
  • Read the insured person, benefit and start date together.
  • A child policy needs its own confirmation.

STEP BY STEP

How to check your cover

  1. Check the version and people on the schedule

Read whether the policy is free or paid and who each part covers. Free versions may provide limited benefits for accidents or death. Pregnancy or birth complications do not thereby count as accidents. Cover for the pregnant person, baby and other parent can differ.

    [2]
  2. Read what the paid cover includes

A paid version may include benefits for specified complications, hospital stays or certain diagnoses. Read each provision and its limitations. Mentioning illness does not mean every illness is covered. Note the event required and the person the benefit applies to. That is easier to understand than a single list of all the product's benefits.

    [3]
  3. Record when each part starts and ends

Distinguish the application date, payment date and start of cover. Paid cover may require payment before labour begins. Some benefits also have conditions about the week of pregnancy or when something was detected. One schedule can therefore contain several important dates. Use the current terms, not an older brochure or one general start date.

    [4]
  4. Read the child policy confirmation separately

If an application for child insurance has been made, check what the insurer has accepted, from which date and with which limitations. Individual child insurance normally involves providing information about the child's health. An application and an insurance confirmation are different documents. Keep the confirmation and any special terms together, so that a submitted form is not mistaken for the complete agreement.

    [7]

An end date is not a transition to the next policy

Pregnancy insurance does not automatically become child insurance. At Folksam, for example, pregnancy cover runs until the baby is six months old, but child insurance is a separate agreement. Check your own end date and whether there is a separate child policy confirmation. A discount offer or reminder is not the same as an agreement being in place.

[5]

What has already appeared can affect cover

A later child policy does not automatically cover illnesses or injuries that have already appeared. Particular conditions may have exclusions or limitations. Read more than the insured amount; ask the insurer to explain any exclusion or start condition you do not understand. The insurance question is separate from questions about care and treatment.

Keep the documents together without confusing the agreements

My Forsio can bring insurance documents together and show the information available in them. In About you, you can answer child-related questions when relevant. Your answers describe your situation; they do not take out insurance or confirm what an insurer has accepted.

Add documents through the app's normal flow and follow the steps shown for information about children. A document missing from the overview does not establish that the child lacks cover. Ask the insurer for the current insurance confirmation when something is unclear.

Fictional example

One pregnancy schedule does not answer both questions.

A parent reviews the documents after the baby's birth.

Pregnancy insurance
Paid version
End stated in pregnancy schedule
When the baby turns six months
Separate child insurance
Unverified

The schedule shows the pregnancy policy's version and end date. A separate document is needed to establish whether child insurance exists and what it covers.

Common questions

Does a free pregnancy policy cover the same things?

No. A free version may have fewer benefits and different amounts from paid cover. Compare what is included for each person and event. The product name or price is not enough to assess a particular case. [2]

Does child insurance always start on the day of birth?

No. Timing depends on the terms and the insurer's confirmation. Konsumenternas explains that child insurance starts no earlier than discharge from the maternity ward. Check the accepted start date for your child and what applies while the application is being processed. [1]

Does My Forsio decide whether a complication is covered?

No. The overview helps you organise the documents. The insurer assesses a reported event under the agreement. This guide does not assess medical conditions or decide which policy to choose.
