Child insurance and school insurance: what is the difference?

School accident insurance and a child policy may cover different things. Check illness, free time, amounts and exclusions in the child's agreements.

Go to the steps

THE SHORT ANSWER

School insurance is usually accident insurance. A child insurance policy may also pay for illness. A child being insured through school therefore does not confirm that both types of cover are in place.

The times covered by school insurance can also differ. Some agreements cover free time; others are more limited. Read the statement from the child's own school or municipality. [1][2]

Keep these points in mind

  • Accidents and illness are separate parts of cover.
  • Check free-time cover in the school's agreement.
  • Two policies can serve different purposes.

STEP BY STEP

How to check your cover

  1. Ask for the school's current insurance statement

Get the statement and terms from the school or municipality. Check that the correct group of pupils and insurance period are listed. Also keep the claim instructions; the insurer is not necessarily the same from one year to the next.

  2. Read which times are covered

Look for wording about school hours, journeys to and from school, free time and holidays. If the statement only says the child is insured, ask for the part of the terms that shows when cover applies.

  3. Compare the child's other policy

Find any private child policy or group policy. Check illness and accidents separately. Compare the sums insured, end age and specific exclusions. A product name does not tell you which diagnoses or consequences are covered.

    [1][3]
  4. Keep fixed amounts and expenses separate

Mark which parts pay fixed benefits and which reimburse actual costs. After an injury, you may need to contact several insurers. Keep dates, statements and receipts so that each insurer receives the right evidence.

Compare the cover on the same basis

A comparison is clearer when you ask both documents the same questions: which event, which times and which payment? Two large sums insured are difficult to compare if they refer to different things.

Even a child policy that covers illness has limits. There may be individual exclusions and specific rules for earlier symptoms or certain diagnoses. Read the attachments to the policy document too.

Collect the documents that apply to the child

In My Forsio, documents you are authorised to add can form part of the overview. Cover needs to be reviewed for the right person and agreement, not just the adult's private policies.

The questions under About you help complete the picture. If the school's documents are missing, check them first; that is not the same as the child being uninsured. The app handles permissions and consent where they are needed.

Fictional example

Two agreements with different cover.

The school statement lists accidents during school hours. A separate document lists illness and accidents, with its own exclusions.

School insurance
Accidents during school hours
Private child insurance
Illness and accidents
School cover during free time
Unverified

The policies cannot be described as identical. Free-time cover needs checking in the full school agreement.

Common questions

Does school insurance apply during the summer holiday?

It depends on the agreement. Ask the school or municipality to show whether the insurance applies around the clock or only in connection with school activities. [2]

Can the child receive payments from both?

For some injuries, both policies may be relevant. You may need to submit a claim to both insurers. The same cost is not reimbursed twice, while fixed benefits are assessed under each policy's terms. [2][4]

Is a group child policy the same as an individual child policy?

No, the cover may differ. Compare the benefits, exclusions and amounts in the current documents rather than relying on how the policy was taken out. [1]
