THE SHORT ANSWER
Start by checking whether both home policies are currently in force. Then compare the address, the people and what is insured. An old letter and a renewal letter may be two versions of the same policy, rather than two policies you are paying for at the same time.
If two policies cover the same thing during the same period, their cover may overlap. You need to check the terms to establish that. Counting the letters is not enough.
Keep these points in mind
- Check the dates before the price.
- Read the policy letter alongside the terms.
- An overlap does not mean everything in the policies is identical.
STEP BY STEP
How to check your cover
Gather the current policy letters
Find your policy letters and terms in your insurers’ online accounts. Also check your membership benefits if you belong to a union. Home insurance may be included without a separate bill.
Note the policy number and who took out each policy. If you share your home with someone, also compare the information showing which people each policy covers.
[2]Compare the start and end dates
Put the periods side by side. A letter whose cover ends the day before the next begins normally indicates a renewal. Mark the documents that cover the same dates, and check whether any policy has been cancelled or replaced.
A payment does not tell the whole story. It may relate to an earlier period. Ask the insurer to confirm the current status if the dates or agreements are unclear.
Check the address and insured people
The same product name does not mean the same cover. Check the home’s address, the type of home and who is covered. A policy at a previous address need not cover the same thing as one at your new address.
Do not assume that being registered at the same address alone determines who is insured. Read the section explaining who the policy covers.
[3][4]Compare the contents, not just the name
Look at cover for belongings, travel, liability and legal expenses. Also compare limits, excesses, exclusions and add-ons. Write down what is actually the same and what differs.
Ask the insurer about anything you cannot establish. A flagged overlap helps you understand your agreements; it does not tell you which policy to cancel.
Can the same loss be paid for twice?
When the same interest is insured against the same risk with several insurers, this is called double insurance. Under the Swedish Insurance Contracts Act, the combined compensation from the insurers cannot exceed the loss.
Two home policies therefore do not automatically mean double compensation for a damaged item. The excess, valuation and other terms affect what can be paid.
[1]Not all overlaps work the same way
Distinguish reimbursement of costs from fixed sums under personal insurance. For example, several accident policies may pay fixed sums for a permanent injury if their conditions are met. The same treatment cost, however, is not reimbursed more than once.
Each part of the cover therefore needs to be considered separately. The rule for a damaged possession cannot tell you what two accident policies might pay.
[5]Fictional example
Two letters. One renewed policy.
The same policy number and address, but different periods.
- Previous letter
- 1 Jan–31 Dec 2026Policy H-104
- Renewal letter
- 1 Jan–31 Dec 2027Policy H-104
The periods do not overlap. In this example, the two letters show a renewal, not duplicate home insurance.
Common questions
Could I need two home policies when moving?
If you still have two homes, each may need its own cover. Your existing policy may also include cover during a move. Check which addresses and dates your particular agreement covers. [4]
How do I check whether home insurance is included through my union?
Read your union’s current membership benefits and your insurance statement. Distinguish between insurance included in membership, an offer to take out a policy and a discount. Ask the union to confirm which applies to you. [2]
Does Forsio find all my policies automatically?
The overview is based on the policies you retrieve or upload. Documents from work or your union may need to be added separately. Something missing from the documents is not thereby confirmed as missing cover.
