THE SHORT ANSWER
Mortgage protection and loan protection are names for insurance that may be linked to a loan. Some cover certain monthly costs during sickness absence or involuntary unemployment, for example. Others provide an amount on death.
There is no general legal requirement to have mortgage protection, and having a mortgage does not itself mean everyone needs separate insurance. Start by establishing what you actually have and which financial commitments are involved. [1][2][3]
Keep these points in mind
- An offer is not confirmation of insurance.
- Payment protection and life cover are different parts.
- Read qualifying periods, waiting periods and exclusions.
STEP BY STEP
How to check your cover
Start with the loan documents
Look for confirmation of insurance, a premium, an application and the insurer's name in the bank's documents. A product brochure or offer does not prove that you joined. Ask the bank to confirm the agreement number and validity if you cannot find confirmation.
[2]Check the requirements for a payout
Read the conditions on employment, working hours, age and health. Distinguish the qualifying period after taking out the policy from the waiting period after an event. Pay particular attention to resignation, known redundancy plans or previous symptoms or conditions. Requirements vary between agreements.
[1][3]Put the agreement in context
Note the maximum monthly amount, longest payment period and premium. Then read the cover you already have through work, membership or other personal insurance. Income insurance and loan protection have different purposes; the same event does not automatically mean the same payment or an unnecessary agreement.

What is mortgage payment protection?
According to Konsumenternas, loan protection is a common form of payment protection insurance. It gives financial protection if you become involuntarily unemployed, go on sick leave or die, and it covers fixed costs such as loans. It is often sold when you take out a mortgage or a credit, or combine your loans. It differs from income insurance, which insures your income.
Konsumenternas lists several requirements that often apply when you take out the policy. Your own terms state which requirements and limits apply to you.
- You are fully fit for work and in permanent employment.
- You are not aware of any redundancy notice.
- You are registered with, and entitled to payments from, the Social Insurance Agency.
- You are within the policy's age limit.
The question starts with your situation
Which fixed costs need paying if your income changes? Is anyone financially dependent on you? Cover on death serves a different purpose from payment protection during unemployment. This guide helps you read the agreements; it does not decide which policy to buy.
[2][1]Gather the confirmation, not just the loan's name
You can add insurance documents to My Forsio and read the information available in them. If mortgage protection appears only in a brochure, its validity still needs confirmation. Forsio is not connected to every bank's loan information. You may need to add the loan document yourself.
Fictional example
A loan and an offer do not give the whole answer.
Two documents have been put side by side.
- Mortgage
- Loan document available
- Payment protection
- Offer, no confirmation
- Insured monthly cost
- Unverified
The bank needs to confirm whether an agreement exists. It is not yet possible to say that the person has or lacks payment protection.
Common questions
Is mortgage protection the same as life insurance?
Not always. The name can include both payment protection and life cover. Read what your particular agreement includes and who receives payment on death. [2]
Does the insurance apply as soon as I take it out?
Not necessarily for every event. Qualifying periods, waiting periods and other requirements may affect entitlement to payment. The date on the policy document is therefore only part of the answer. [1][3]
How long is the qualifying period?
According to Konsumenternas, the qualifying period varies between 30 and 90 days. Normally you must not go on sick leave during the first 30 days, or receive a redundancy notice during the first 90 days, after taking out the policy. Your terms state what applies. [1]
Does mortgage protection apply if I resign?
No. According to Konsumenternas, these policies only apply if you become involuntarily unemployed, not if you resign yourself. [1]
Are some illnesses excluded?
Yes, the terms can exclude certain illnesses. Konsumenternas mentions sick leave because of mental health problems as a common exclusion. Read the exclusions in your own terms. [1]
