THE SHORT ANSWER
There is no central register of all a deceased person's insurance. Start with the evidence, then ask insurers, employers and unions. You do not have to resolve everything in the same call.
This guide helps you make a search list. It does not determine who may represent the estate or who is entitled to compensation. The insurer needs to assess authority and the applicable agreement. [1][2]
Keep these points in mind
- Find out which authority and certificates each contact requires.
- Also look through work, memberships, loans and pensions.
- Never use the deceased person's BankID.
STEP BY STEP
How to check your cover
Start with who may handle the contact
Ask the insurer which documents it requires to release information or make changes. A registered estate inventory shows who has the right to represent the estate. Before it is ready, other documents may be needed for particular matters.
Order a death certificate with family details from the Swedish Tax Agency. It shows the death and certain family relationships; it is not a general power of attorney. If one person represents several estate beneficiaries, written authority may be needed. Check the recipient's requirements and form.
[3][4][2]Look for policy letters and payments
Review documents you are entitled to access: policy letters, annual statements and bank statements. Record the insurer, number and insured person or property. A payment can point to an agreement but does not show what may be paid after the death.
Ask the digital mailbox provider or bank how the estate can obtain authorised access to documents. Do not use the deceased person's sign-in. BankID is personal; knowing a code does not replace the right to represent someone.
[1][7][2]Also ask work, the union and the lender
Contact current or former employers and relevant membership organisations. Ask about group insurance, TGL and which insurer handles deaths. Someone else may have paid for the cover, so it may not appear among the person's own payments.
Also check loan documents for any loan protection. Ask pension providers or selection centres whether survivor cover exists. Keep these questions separate: membership, a loan or an earned pension does not in itself establish entitlement to a particular payment.
[1][5]Contact the insurer with a clear question
Record the date, insurer, question, missing information and next step for each contact. Ask which agreements applied at death, who needs to report it and which documents are required. Use the insurer's secure channel for sensitive information.
If you only have an old insurer name, ask Konsumenternas how to find its successor. An unanswered enquiry is not proof that no insurance existed.

Compensation and inheritance are separate questions
Ask the insurer who may receive compensation under the policy. Payment can depend on a beneficiary designation or other agreement rules. An entry in your own list is therefore not a decision to pay the estate.
Also check public survivor pension with the Swedish Pensions Agency. Some cases are investigated automatically, while cross-border circumstances, for example, may require direct contact. An agency decision does not replace enquiries about private insurance or occupational pensions.
[5][6]Separate the search from ending cover
A home, car or belongings may remain in the estate. Ask the insurer what cover continues, who it covers and when a change can be made. Do not cancel agreements just because you have found them on a bank statement.
Ask separately what happens to jointly insured people. Someone remaining in the home may need a current policy letter of their own. Have the insurer confirm continuation before treating an old letter as valid cover for the survivor.
[1]My Forsio is your own insurance overview
My Forsio's standard sign-in is for your own overview. It is not an estate service and does not give access to a deceased person's account or authority to retrieve their insurance. A power of attorney does not automatically become permission in the app.
If your own policies change after the death, you can add your new documents and update About you. For estate documents and compensation matters, contact the relevant insurer or agency instead.
Fictional example
Three contacts, not three confirmed payments.
Robin helps make a search list after a death. Each recipient checks authority.
- Private policy letter
- Insurer and number found
- Group cover through work
- UnverifiedAsk the employer for the applicable agreement.
- Pension cover
- UnverifiedThe question goes to the pension provider.
The list shows what remains to ask. It establishes neither that cover is absent nor who receives money.
Common questions
Do insurers find out about the death themselves?
Insurers have obligations to check deaths and inform those concerned. There is still no central register. Contact relevant organisations and look for evidence. [1][5]
Can I sign into My Forsio for the deceased person?
No. Do not use the deceased person's BankID. The standard consumer flow supports your own insurance overview, rather than an estate's authority or access.
MY FORSIO
Keep your own overview current.
If your own insurance has changed, you can gather your new documents in My Forsio. Contact insurers directly for the estate's matters.
