Warranty, purchase protection and all-risk: what is the difference?

Separate your statutory rights from warranties and insurance. Read what card purchase protection, all-risk and identity protection include before comparing them.

THE SHORT ANSWER

A phone can have a warranty certificate, product insurance and possible cover through home insurance or a payment card. Similar names can answer different questions. A manufacturing defect and a dropped phone are different events.

Start with the documents you already have. Warranties, purchase protection, all-risk and identity protection are not compulsory cover for everyone. An optional extra being absent does not by itself mean you have an insurance gap. [1][3][4]

Keep these points in mind

  • Statutory rights apply even without a warranty.
  • Card cover depends on the terms and how the purchase was paid for.
  • An extra's name does not establish what it pays for.

STEP BY STEP

How to check your cover

  1. Separate a product defect from an accident

When you buy goods from a business, you normally have three years to complain about an original defect under Swedish consumer law. That complaint goes to the seller. A warranty is a voluntary promise with its own scope and period; it does not replace your statutory rights.

Write down what happened before choosing which document to read. Did the phone stop working during normal use, get dropped or get stolen? Keep the purchase details, date and description. They help separate possible routes without deciding the outcome in advance.

    [2][1]
  2. Read the card terms for that purchase

Some cards provide purchase insurance or an extended warranty. Check the card variant, payment requirements, eligible goods and period after purchase. Having a card does not establish that a particular purchase qualifies. Keep the receipt and payment record with the correct terms version.

As a specific example, Swedbank's published card comparison requires the entire item to be paid for with the card for its extended warranty. The table also sets a minimum purchase price. These are conditions for the listed cards, not a shared rule for all cards or every benefit on the same card.

    [5][6]
  3. Compare product insurance with all-risk cover

Product insurance normally covers one specified item. All-risk cover can cover several of your belongings against sudden and unforeseen events. It can be part of a larger home policy or an optional extra. The name does not mean every type of damage or loss is covered.

Compare the same event in both documents: maximum amount, excess, valuation, exclusions and care requirements. A lower excess in one policy does not mean its entire cover is broader. Read how the cover interacts when the same event involves both documents.

  4. Read what identity protection actually helps with

Many home policies include identity protection. It can help dispute fraudulent demands, correct payment-default records and provide legal help. That is different from a promise to replace all money lost to fraud, and the service cannot prevent every identity theft.

Check whom to contact, which events the help covers and which costs may be paid. Separate assistance, legal costs and compensation for financial loss. If the documents do not answer a question, ask the insurer rather than assuming the help exists or is absent.

    [4]

One item can appear in several documents

Make one row for each question: accidental damage, a functional defect, theft or help after identity theft. Then note where each answer comes from. An empty field means more information is needed, not that an insurer has promised or refused anything.

The same phone appearing in two documents is not enough to establish duplicate insurance. The documents can cover different events, periods and conditions. Ask the party handling the claim to explain how other protection affects your particular claim.

Bring together what you can check in Forsio

In My Forsio you can gather insurance documents and return to the source behind a result. Use Belongings to see your items and available recorded limits. A missing limit is Unverified, not unlimited cover.

Always compare with the original. Forsio does not automatically decide whether a card purchase meets payment requirements or a warranty applies. The insurer decides insurance compensation; a statutory complaint or warranty question is handled by the responsible business.

Fictional example

Three documents about one tablet

Alex has a tablet bought for 3 060 kr. Each document needs to be read separately.

Warranty
Period stated in the warranty certificate
Home insurance
All-risk listed in the policy letter
Card payment requirements
UnverifiedThe example has no payment record.

No compensation has been decided. A document about the item does not automatically confirm the conditions in another.

Common questions

Must I have all-risk or separate identity protection?

No. They are optional products or extras. Read what you already have and what the service actually does. The absence of an optional extra is not by itself an established insurance gap. [3][4]

Do my rights end when a warranty expires?

No. For goods bought from a business, statutory rights may still apply after the warranty expires. Check the purchase date and the nature of the defect. The three-year rule does not mean every type of damage is covered. [1]
