Retiring: what happens to your insurance?

Check what changes through work, which age limits apply and where to find your survivor cover. Start with the agreements you already have.

THE SHORT ANSWER

When you retire, cover through work can change. But it does not all end on the same birthday, and starting to draw a pension is not always the same as stopping work. Start with your employment, agreement and insurance documents.

Make two lists: insurance that may change and cover that may pay your survivors. The latter may be part of life insurance or a pension. A name in an overview is not enough to establish what applies. [1][4]

Keep these points in mind

  • Check each policy's end age and conditions.
  • Separate life insurance through work from pension survivor cover.
  • Ask the pension provider how a choice affects your own pension.

STEP BY STEP

How to check your cover

  1. Gather the documents before the change

Find your private policy letters, group agreement through work and union membership insurance documents. Record policy numbers, insured people, amounts and the dates the information applies to. Put earlier documents aside so an old version is not your only evidence.

Ask your employer which collective agreement or other arrangement covers you. Request information for your situation: stopping completely, continuing work or reducing your hours. A general retirement information sheet may not answer all three.

  2. Check what continues and what ends

Ask your employer and insurer for an end date for each part. Sickness cover, occupational injury cover and TGL, group life insurance through work, can follow different rules. Avtalat shows, for example, that rules differ for manual and salaried employees continuing work after 65.

For membership insurance, check whether pensioner membership belongs to the same group agreement. If you leave the group, continuation insurance may be time-limited and subject to particular conditions. Ask the insurer what applies and the deadline for any application.

    [1][2]
  3. Read the age limits in your own agreements

An accident policy may last for life or end at a particular age. Amounts and scope can also change with age. Check both the end age and any reduction in benefits, even if you are still paying the same premium.

Write down what changes and where it is stated. An offer for senior insurance does not establish that you have taken it out. Keep offers separate from current policy documents when organising the paperwork.

    [3]
  4. Find the survivor cover statement

Ask each pension provider or selection centre to confirm the cover, who can receive money and how long payments can continue. Repayment cover, family cover and family pension are different arrangements. They need not be present in every pension you have earned.

Also check any beneficiary designation. It specifies who receives compensation within the agreement's permitted group of people. A previous relationship or changed finances may make it relevant to ask whether the details still fit; Forsio does not change a choice with the provider.

    [6][7]

Survivor cover also affects your own pension

Repayment cover can pass pension capital to survivors. It also affects your own occupational pension because you do not receive the same share of inheritance gains. Other forms of cover can charge a premium taken from pension contributions.

Ask the pension provider to show the effect under your agreement before making a choice. The question depends, among other things, on who is financially dependent on you and what other cover exists. This guide makes no calculation or recommendation about your pension choice.

[4][7]

Premium pension survivor cover is a separate choice

Survivor cover within the premium pension has specific rules about the partner, timing and changes. It is separate from occupational pensions and can reduce your own premium pension. The Swedish Pensions Agency explains when the choice can be made and its effect on payments.

Check this directly with the agency. Repayment cover at an occupational pension provider does not establish the same cover within your premium pension.

Gather what can be checked

In My Forsio you can bring together your own insurance documents and update About you when your work situation changes. A missing group agreement needs to be requested from work or your union, rather than treated as proof that cover is absent.

Forsio is not a pension forecast and does not change beneficiaries, pensions or insurance agreements. Use the overview for your insurance documents; ask the pension provider to confirm pension cover separately.

Fictional example

One retirement. Three separate questions.

Alex stops working and has a private accident policy letter, but no current group agreement.

Private accident
300 000 krAmount in the saved policy letter.
TGL after the last working day
UnverifiedA current statement from work is needed.
Repayment cover
Check with the pension provider

Alex asks about each part separately. A private insurance amount establishes neither the end date of work cover nor survivor cover in the pension.

Common questions

Does everyone need new life insurance at retirement?

No. Start with financial dependencies and the cover that actually exists. Retirement changing an agreement is not a general reason for everyone to take out separate life insurance.

Are TGL and repayment cover the same thing?

No. TGL is group life insurance through employment. Repayment cover belongs to the pension. Check each agreement, its recipients and validity. [1][4]

Does Forsio show my entire future pension?

No. My Forsio shows evidence about your insurance. For pension forecasts, choices and payment statements, use the pension organisations' own services.
