THE SHORT ANSWER
According to Konsumenternas, private healthcare insurance can provide access to care coordination, specialist care, preventive measures and rehabilitation. It can also reimburse costs for medicine and aftercare. Product names vary, for example healthcare insurance or care insurance, so read the content rather than the name.
The insurance supplements public healthcare, which everyone living in Sweden is entitled to. It does not provide care for an illness you already have when you take it out. Nor is it the same as sickness insurance, which concerns income when you cannot work. [1]
Keep these points in mind
- The insurance covers care under the agreement, within its limits.
- The health declaration and start date determine when cover can begin.
- Through work, it is normally a taxable benefit.
STEP BY STEP
How to check your cover
Read what is included and what is excluded
Go through the list of what the policy covers, such as specialist care, surgery, hospital stays, rehabilitation, psychological treatment and medicines. Note the number of sessions and other limits. Konsumenternas points out that the scope can differ between policies.
Then read the section on limitations. In one insurer's pre-purchase information from April 2026, for example, the policy does not apply to treatment of chronic conditions, and it does not pay for emergency care, dental care or lost earnings. Konsumenternas also raises the question of what applies after, for example, a cancer diagnosis.
[1][7][2]Check the health declaration and start date
For an individual policy, Konsumenternas says your health declaration needs to be approved. Answer the questions about your health fully and truthfully. There is often an upper age limit for taking out the policy, and it is stated in the terms.
Read the start date in the policy document. In the pre-purchase information above, the insurer's liability begins at the earliest on the day after the application, and only if the health declaration is approved. Certain conditions, such as mental health problems and burnout, are not covered there if the policy has been in force for less than two years when the condition arises.
[1][7]See how care is booked and what you pay yourself
According to Konsumenternas, you contact the insurer if you fall ill, and the insurer refers you to a care provider. In the pre-purchase information above, the policy only applies if you first contact the insurer's care coordination service. Read which contact route your agreement requires before booking anything yourself.
You usually pay an excess when you use the policy. In the pre-purchase information above it is 750 kr per claim, and no excess is charged if you have a referral from a doctor in public healthcare. Also read whether the agreement has a time guarantee for specialist visits or surgery, and what applies to aftercare.
[1][3][7][2]Check the tax if the policy comes through work
According to Konsumenternas, healthcare insurance paid for by an employer is a group policy. The employer chooses the insurer and the scope, and pays the premium. Ask for the insurance statement and terms so you know what applies to you personally.
According to the Swedish Tax Agency, free healthcare insurance is a benefit you pay tax on. The benefit is normally valued at the premium. If the policy covers both taxable and tax-free care, the taxable part can be calculated as 60 percent of the premium. With a premium of 4 000 kr per year, the benefit value is then 2 400 kr.
[3][4]
How does it differ from public healthcare?
Public healthcare has a care guarantee. According to 1177, it means contact with your health centre the same day, a medical assessment within three days at most, a specialist appointment within 90 days and treatment within 90 days of the decision. The guarantee only applies in the region where you are registered as resident, and not at private providers without tax funding or an agreement with a region.
Konsumenternas describes the insurance as a supplement. It may be relevant if your region has long waiting lists for care, or if you need specialist care that requires a referral and prefer not to go through your health centre. Also check whether your agreement excludes emergency care, as the pre-purchase information above does.
[6][1][7]Read the agreement beside the statement from work
Keep the policy document, pre-purchase information and any statement from work in My Forsio. You then have the start date, excess and exclusions in one place when reading what the agreement contains. If the statement from work is missing, the cover is Unverified, not confirmed absent.
Claim check Beta helps you read terms within the areas the feature supports. Forsio makes no medical assessment, does not book care and does not decide whether a treatment is covered. The insurer decides what applies in your case.
Fictional example
The start date does not answer everything.
Sam has healthcare insurance through work and is reading the statement before a specialist visit.
- Policy in force from
- 1 March 2026
- Excess per claim
- 500 kr
- Condition present before the start date
- UnverifiedAsk the insurer how the terms treat it.
The agreement is in force, but the start date does not confirm that this particular condition is covered. The terms and the insurer's decision settle that.
Common questions
When does private health insurance start after you take it out?
It starts on the date stated in the policy document, provided the requirements for taking it out are met. For an individual policy, the health declaration needs to be approved. In one insurer's pre-purchase information, liability begins at the earliest on the day after the application, and certain conditions such as mental health problems are not covered until the policy has been in force for two years. An illness you already have when you take out the policy does not give a right to care. [1][7]
What does private healthcare insurance cover?
According to Konsumenternas, it can provide access to care coordination, specialist care, preventive measures and rehabilitation, and reimburse costs for medicine and aftercare. Surgery, hospital stays and psychological treatment may be included, sometimes with their own limits, for example on the number of sessions. Read the list and limitations in your own agreement. [1][7]
Is healthcare insurance through a company taxable?
Yes. According to the Swedish Tax Agency, free healthcare insurance is a taxable benefit valued at the employer's cost, normally the premium. If it covers both taxable and tax-free care, the taxable part can be calculated at a standard 60 percent of the premium. You pay tax on the benefit in the month the employer pays the premium. According to Konsumenternas, the rules have applied since 1 July 2018. [4][3]
Is group sickness insurance the same as healthcare insurance?
No. Konsumenternas notes that healthcare insurance is not to be confused with sickness insurance. The tax differs too. According to the Swedish Tax Agency, free group sickness insurance is tax-free if designed in line with a collective agreement, but payments for lost income are taxable. Free healthcare insurance, by contrast, is a taxable benefit. [1][5][4]
Does the care guarantee apply if I have private healthcare insurance?
Everyone living in Sweden keeps the right to public healthcare. The care guarantee applies in the region where you are registered as resident, but not at private providers without tax funding or an agreement with a region. Any time guarantee in the policy follows the agreement's own terms. [6][1]
